I’ve had so many couples telling me about their new expensive cameras that they can’t get to grips with so I’m running a Beginner’s Creative Photography Course in Manchester for all those who’d like to get to make it a serious hobby. Maybe they’d like to shoot in Manual and be a little more in control or find a reason to take more pictures! This course is for beginners, people wanting to brush up on their creative manual skills and for all those wishing to make photography a little more important in their lives. This will be my 3rd year running this particular course and it has proved enormously successful with many students going on to earn from their photography and others leaving inspired to make photography a more serious hobby.
My photography courses are based loosely around the images I take in my personal life as a mother, wife, traveller and story-teller. The aim with my personal photography is for it to result in images I want to put on the walls of my home that I’m proud of. Whatever you enjoy taking pictures of (and maybe you don’t know what that is yet!) this course will give you ideas, passion and technical guidance taught in a way that won’t scare you, so that you can begin to feel more confident about picking up your camera and can expose images correctly using aperture, shutter speed and ISO.
The Beginner’s Creative Photography Course is a full day usually on a weekend that requires you bring a DSLR (digital camera with full manual capability) old or new. We will begin with a session covering the basic knowledge needed to take better photos with your DSLR using the manual camera functions, aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Each student will shoot in full manual the whole day. We look at light, exposure, composition, creativity, how to choose your subjects/scenes wisely, where and when to take photos to get the best results and even when NOT to take photos! I also give you the knowledge you need to store, use and print your images to make sure you get the best results. The course is suitable for anyone starting from the very beginning, through to people wanting to brush up their manual skills and get inspired! You really can go at your own pace.
NEW DATE ANNOUNCED: 22nd April 2017
-We’ll be based in Manchester City Centre (venue confirmed nearer the time) and we’ll start at 9am, running through until 5-6pm.
-The workshop will start with a brief getting to know each other and your camera over a cuppa, followed by the manual technical session. We then practise our new knowledge of the manual settings with a little indoor shooting and then follow this with some further creative shooting outdoors in the city.
-Lunch and a drink are included (we usually head to Rosy Lee Tea Rooms!), then out again to practise some more portrait based techniques using light, creativity and a model!
-Finally back to the pub at around 3.30pm to chat about choosing your images, how to use and store them, any questions!
-Following the day I’ll invite you into a Facebook group so you can add the photos you took from the workshop and get a little critique. You can use the group as a general Q & A platform so that I can help you along over time as you get to grips with what you’ve learned.

“Anyone even vaguely considering this, DO IT!! I went on this course earlier this year and haven’t looked back. Nicola is the most wonderful tutor and so generous with her knowledge. I learned so much and have been shooting in manual ever since which I never thought I’d be able to do. Can’t recommend enough.” Jennifer
“I first came across Nicola’s amazing work following her images of a friends’ wedding. I was so pleased to find out that she also offered workshops!! I had an amazing day on her creative workshop, I gained new confidence in a few elements that I’d already learnt but hadn’t “used in anger”, and got some really good results on the day. If anyone is considering booking a workshop (either group session, or one-to-one) with Nicola, I would highly recommend doing so as soon as you can. Her knowledge, enthusiasm, creativity and teaching style are all absolutely top notch!!! First class day ” Carolyn
“I was looking for inspiration and creativeness with my photography and contacted Nicola Thompson and booked onto her Beginners Photography Course. The day was awesome and jam packed with knowledge and direction at a pace I could follow. I came away knowing my camera a lot better and feeling inspired to pick up my camera and shoot my family and friends in a creative way. Thank you ” Phil
“Ahh Nicola Thompson your passion shines through your face like beams and you have the ability to make people feel calm & safe and that everything will be alright, which is quite rare. Thanks for reigniting my interest and inspiring my eye on yesterday’s workshop. I’m not so scared of that big black plastic thing with all it’s buttons & dials. And am looking forward to practising in family adventures & holidays!” Claire
